How did you pluck my signed card from inside that balloon?

How did all those coins come out of your armpit!

Oradell Challenger Baseball League

Is that your signed card?

This rope looks normal to me

Deal 20 cards into my hand

Flip the card you're thinking of over in the deck

Several times throughout the year I have the rare opportunity to perform for special needs kids, and over the fast few weeks I performed two very special shows. One was for the Oradell Challenger Little League baseball group and the other was at Montgomery Academy which is a state funded special needs school.

Never underestimate the abilities of these wonderful special kids!

I’ll never forget about ten years ago how terrified I felt the first time I looked out into an audience filled with kids confined to wheelchairs and leg braces or dealing with conditions ranging from various degrees of mental retardation to autism to Cerebral Palsy.  Although the director of the facility assured me that the kids had the capacity to understand me and follow along, I still proceeded with caution.

As usual, in these types of performances, an important lesson was taught to me… never underestimate the abilities of these wonderful special kids! Not only do they follow along and participate and laugh and react appropriately at all the right places, they react in such a unique way that leaves me with a indescribable feeling.

Their reactions are priceless and their expressions of gratitude and appreciation following the performance are just as special as they are and rarely seen with typical audiences.

It’s times like these that I appreciate how fortunate I am that I was blessed with three healthy thriving kids. I also appreciate how fortunate I am to perform for kids like these and to add a little bit of happiness to their lives.

Realizing the need

For ten plus years, 30-minute interactive songwriting workshops have been a staple of my performing repertoire which are usually done in addition to my 50-minute “Magical Songwriter” performances. I’ll never forget the day about seven years ago when a student in one of the workshops suggested that we write a song about the school. After learning from many school officials that their school songs were ancient, non existent, or simply song parodies of old standard tunes I realized that there was a need to update or create newer “cooler” school songs.  The rest as they say is “History”.

Since then, I have performed more than 100 “Write a Cool School Song” assembly programs and without a doubt, they are the most creative, original and unique school assembly programs that I offer.

It’s a collaborative effort

This one-of-a-kind all-day program is a collaborative effort with myself and the students and begins with three 30 minute morning songwriting workshops.  Each group works with me to create a different part of the song and by lunchtime we have a complete, original, school song complete with two verses and a chorus of customized, personalized  lyrics backed up with original guitar music and a drum pattern.

In the afternoon, the entire school assembles for a 40-minute  high energy assembly program unveiling the school song as it is performed for the very first time. Several recordings of the songs are created including participation from dozens of students. The assembly ends with a bang as the teachers assemble in front of the entire school to sing their rendition of the school song.

Satisfaction, pride, and a sense of ownership

The students not only gain the satisfaction and pride that goes along with creating a school song, they gain the once-in-a-lifetime experience of participating in the creation of a song. It took me many years of trial and error to learn the craft of songwriting and the songwriting process until I finally developed a system that worked for me. If only I had been exposed to a songwriter at an earlier age who showed me how to do it, it would have been much easier for me.

Please watch this video highlighting an actual  ”Write a Cool School Song” workshop and assembly. Ask yourself if your school song is in need of some revamping. If so, give me a call.

What did you really think of the Program?

As a performer, in the end the only thing that really matters is whether or not the audience liked your performance. More specifically, was the person who hired you completely satisfied that you delivered a top notch high quality performance as was promised when you were first contacted. Most importantly, was your performance of a quality worthy of  that person referring you to other potential clients?

That being said, it is nearly impossible to convince the prospective client of the quality of your performance without sounding biased or being labeled a braggart.

How can I be sure you didn’t write that yourself?

In the past, I have relied on handwritten testimonial letters from satisfied clients to provide to prospective clients. I have also accumulated  a list of satisfied clients who have agreed to speak to prospective clients on my behalf. But with the advent of pocket sized “Flip” video cameras and our friend Youtube, the video testimonial has emerged as the gold standard for quality testimonials.

And just like that, gone is the question “Is this a real testimonial or did he just add words or just write it himself?” Gone are the attempts at tracking down people who promised with full intention to speak on your behalf but only half remember your performance 8 months later. Gone is the two week time gap between initial contact and booking the program that used to be needed to check out references.

Technology rocks!

So please check out some of the video testimonials that people were nice enough to make for me.

Jeff

This is the first in a series of “performance only” videos.

Please watch “Upside Down” which is my version of the classic “Invisible Deck” effect. Please notice that by emotionally involving the spectator together we have a special magical experience.

As always, please feel free to leave comments.

Enjoy! Jeff Blum

I saw this quotation on a poster in my doctor’s office the other day.

“In one hundred years, it will not matter what house I lived in, what car I drove, or even what my clothes looked like. What will matter is that I made a difference in the life of a child.”

Sometimes I try to explain and understand why I do what I do. What is it that keeps me motivated? What do I think about and remember most about the performance on my way home? The answer is below… the smiling faces of the kids from a recent performance. This is proof positive that I am achieving what I set out to achieve, to make a difference in the life of a child. Once I have their attention, they don’t even realize that they’re learning positive messages.

Deep down I know that even though I may never see the direct results of the children’s lives I have affected, I know I am making a difference in their lives every day.

How in the World did you do That?

My favorite part of performing as a magician is that special moment of reaction when a person has realized that there is no logical explanation for what just happened. The only way for them to react is as though a miracle has happened. Screams, bursts of laughter and breathtaking gasps of wonder are very common initial reactions which are usually followed by standard “How did you do that?” to shrieks of “Oh my God” or “What the &%$#&^*?” In some extreme cases I have even been inadvertently slapped or grabbed by the perplexed over reactive spectator.

It’s reactions like these that first got me hooked on magic and inspire me to continue performing as a professional magician.

Enjoy!

I Put Myself in the Shoes of the Audience

The “Success Magic” middle and high school assembly program is probably the most challenging but at the same time, it’s also the most rewarding. When I develop an assembly program,  I put myself in the shoes of the audience members and try to experience it through their eyes. I remember back in the day the last thing I wanted was for some old guy to preach to me about what he thought was best for me. So here are the simple rules I follow when creating and performing an assembly program for this age group. 1- I always include entertainment and for this age group, magic works best. 2-I make certain the magic is strong and age appropriate. 3- I never speak for longer than 2-3 minute stretches.

Phone Calls from Anxious Principals

When I first made the transition to include middle school and high school programs,  I received telephone inquiries from anxious principals wanting reassurance that I could present a quality program that would be free of wandering eyeballs, private conversations, inappropriate laughs, heckling and other telltale behavior confirming that I am not ready to tackle this challenging age group. But there is no substitute for experience.

The Day I Earned my Stripes

I’ll never forget the day when I finally earned my stripes as a motivational magician. About 7 years ago, I found was performing for a group of tough inner city 7th and 8th graders at a middle  school in Trenton, NJ. As I began my program, a defiant girl made the decision that she was going to be the center of attention, not me. She was clearly testing and disrespecting me as she decided to conduct a loud private conversation with her neighbor, completely disregarding the fact that I was on stage speaking. To make matters worse, there were no teachers or faculty members present who were taking any actions to help me. It was apparent that I was on my own and I needed to take action quickly or else I was doomed. Having no other choice, I leaped off the stage and headed in the girl’s direction. As I approached her, I said in a stern yet calm voice “Today’s program is about making the right decisions and respecting others and it looks like we have a person here who can learn a thing or two about both of these topics.” I then looked her squarely in the eyes and loudly said  ”Let’s see if this person can make the right decision and show some respect to the performer who is a guest at the school”. At this moment there was a gasp from the entire group and a collective “Whoa”. I would be lying if I told you I wasn’t just a little bit scared. I went back on stage continued the program and to my surprise, she remained silent and respectful as did the rest of the group for the remainder of the program.

Practice Makes Perfect

Of course, this is an extreme isolated case and nothing like this has ever happened to me since. In fact, over the  years I have honed and perfected my Success Magic program to the point where wandering eyeballs, private conversations and heckling are a thing of the past.

Versatility is the Key

In addition to performing in schools as a motivational performer, I also perform in many other venues including private parties, corporate events, restaurants, weddings, Bar-Bat Mitzvahs, etc. This flexibility has prepared me to be able to perform for such a wide variety of audiences and ages. Last week, I was performing my weekly Wednesday night stint of walk around, table side, close up magic at a local restaurant in NJ. It is an upscale restaurant with great food and terrific ambiance. I was hired by the restaurant owner to enhance the dining experience of the patrons by offering them an opportunity to experience professional close-up magic compliments of the restaurant.

What Gives me the Right?

I approached a couple engaged in pleasant conversation and was excited to learn that they were celebrating their 19th wedding anniversary.  Although I have been performing at restaurants successfully for years, I often ask myself  what gives me the right to invade the privacy of a stranger’s dinner table to perform my magic tricks? For me, the answer defines my purpose as a magician and performer, to transform our moment together from ordinary to memorable. As a result, it is my hope that years from now when this couple looks back on their 19th anniversary, they will remember their special evening not only by the great food and ambiance of a great restaurant but by the magician who had the nerve to “invade our privacy” and transform our special night into a memorable, magical evening we will never forget.  Please watch the video of a performance of walkaround magic at a holiday party.

The Key to Making a Moment Memorable

Instead of performing “to” the spectator, I perform “with” the spectator. It is always my goal to emotionally involve the spectator in my magic making it appear as though the spectator is actually involved in the outcome of the effect. I want them to have the perception that together we have created a miracle and shared a magical experience. As a result, the moment and the event is transformed from ordinary to memorable.

Thanks for reading and watching and please share your opinions.

The Most Important Minute of My Day

As a motivational performer, each day I am faced with the monumental challenge of having a life changing impact on a group of several hundred elementary, middle or high school students… in 50 minutes. Realistically, experience tells me that when I am performing one of my school assembly programs, I have exactly one minute to capture and engage their attention or else the next 49 minutes will be an eternity of wandering eyeballs, private conversations and lack of attention. Because I never get a second chance to make a first impression, it is clearly the most important minute of my day.

Finding the Perfect Blend of Entertainment and Education

The best way to get these challenging groups on your side is to engage them by making the school assembly programs educational and at the same time fun and entertaining, but this is easier said than done. Putting together a fun and entertaining age appropriate school assembly program is relatively easy. The greater challenge is to cleverly combine the fun and entertainment with important, life changing, positive messages in such a way that the students are engaged and at the same time, the administration is satisfied that the students are receiving a benefit beyond pure entertainment.

The Importance of Knowing my Audience

Over the past ten years, I have created and delivered thousands of age appropriate, meaningful, topical school assembly programs for students of every grade level from K-12. Truthfully, I shudder at the thought of presenting a program without having the assistance of some form of entertainment to include in my presentation.  However, I must choose my material very carefully because  what may be considered fun for one age group may be considered “babyish” or too advanced for another group.

Appropriate Programs for Every Age Group

It is for this reason that many motivational performers remain pigeonholed into one specific age group. For example, when I first started out, my programs were suitable for K-3 audiences. However, when I tried performing the same program for a group of 4th 5th and 6th graders, wandering eyeballs and private conversations made it obvious to me that changes were needed.  Over the years I have had similar issues with middle school and high school students but now I can proudly say that I have age appropriate school assembly programs for every group of students from K-12. The above “Magical Songwriter” school assembly program performance is suitable for a K-5 audience.

Everybody Needs to Hear Positive Messages

Watch for future blogs where I will highlight some of the performances for middle school and high school students. Not surprisingly, I also have motivational programs for adult audiences because everybody needs to hear positive messages.
